Medieval Society (Bryan) Those who were citizens formed half the population, although sometimes they were as little as 10 to 15 percent. The citizens were the tradesmen and the merchants, the blood of the city. Citizenship was generally only inherited, but it could be given to individuals or to families, usually as a reward for some extra service to the city. By the later Middle Age and citizenship went hand in hand.
